From what I understand, when a flavor cartridge is empty, it is automatically removed from the menus.
Also, the machines have ethernet and some sort of Wifi (cell or wifi) that allows them to check the machine to see what is selling as well as levels of the flavor cartridges.
The carts & machine have a patented RFID system that automatically tells the machine what flavor was inserted and other info. It is easy to refill as it also tells the operator where the cartridge is inside the machine.

considering you …
considering you technically need ice for the carbonation to properly mix with the syrup you are not getting a true soda from a soda fountain without ice. the carbonated water and syrup are run in a series of tubes around the ice chamber to get them as cold as possible before mixing, but they warm up considerably once they come out of the nozzle, unless they are hitting something cold when they land, they will not mix well.
