what equipment is used to restrain and handle cattle?
i no a rope halter can be used but how do you approach the cow 2 put it on and how 2 apply it? i have a pic of how to make one but thats it… i dont mean chutes or anything its more more handling them and restraining many thanks.
its 4 an assignment so dogs cannot be used
If cattle are unused to being handled then initially the animal will have to be chased own a race to a smaller area, a chute as you called it. Restraining the animal by putting your fingers into it’s nose and bringing the head back around, as though it is looking over it’s shoulder can be used but strength is needed to do this. A rope halter can be put on at this stage but again, due to the strength of these animals, holding onto it may well be problematic! Most farmers use a cattle crush in order to hold an animal, for safety to both the farmer and the animal. Bulls often have a nose ring and farmers then use a leading pole. It works in a similar way to the fingers in the nose, this area is very sensitive and an animal will struggle less to avoid pain and discomfort if it knows it can’t get away.
