From the UK TV show ‘That’s Life’ in Feb 1986, comes this classic comedy feature about three German Shepherd dogs who lived at the George Hotel in Castle Cary, Somerset. Their favourite pastime was to stand at the bar while the landlord squirted Soda Water into their mouths. A classic comedy moment that many of you will remember watching when the show went out live on a Sunday evening all those years ago.
The show’s long time presenter was Esther Rantzen. Also seen in this clip, reading viewers letters, is Mollie Sugden – Mrs Slocombe in ‘Are You Being Srved’.

It’s the long pause …
It’s the long pause between such diverse items that I well remember (and why I included this example)….. long pause, slow turn of the head – “Mollie”……very effective. But wouldn’t be allowed to happen in today’s TV where constant on screen action is required – for fear of today’s channel zappers using the pause to switch channels. But perhaps that’s what’s wrong with TV today – no chance to pause and reflect.

This series was my …
This series was my first memory of That’s Life, with the Mills/Campbell/Baynham and Sugden line-up. It was always the best part of 1980s Sunday TV, up there along with Bullseye, Highway and Spitting Image. Always talk of the Monday morning playground and constantly reminded me of “school in a few hours time”. I could strongly relate to the serious stories they put out due to personal experiences, but on the other hand I also had a laugh at the Odd Odes part, as Cyril Fletcher called them.

I’m not sure he is, it sounds like made-up quasi-Oriental language, and probably closer to Chinese! If he was speaking Japanese, he’d say something like “oi inutachi, mizu o nomitai?”
